When inside, we quickly checked the map (and even more quickly, ditched it) before heading straight to Splatt Nation- an area with crafts (Emme; 'Eeeeeeee!), Splatt! Sponge Attack (Brock and Zach; "..." *running*) and water (Han; 'Thank Christ'). You really don't need to move much to enjoy the main attraction- the kites. However it's amazing to walk around and see the different movements as you get closer. We enjoyed the spinning, twirling and chiming from Splatt Nation for a while before we set off to check out the market stalls and kite flying area. As you get closer to the flying arena, you realise that there are so many more low-flying kites than what you see while moving around. They all link to each other and are just amazing to watch move as one unit. On the Sunday we loved watching the local Kite Club putting on a display of flying, one following the other, tangling and untangling and landing with complete precision. Considering the only things we can move out into the wind with precision are our farts, it's amazing to watch this skill. Another great demonstration of sky skills was the plane that went over for a few minutes, it was sensational to watch, and made us very excited for the Red Bull Air Race we will see in Indianapolis later this year. The stalls were the standard fair wares, with a more eclectic, family oriented vibe as opposed to the cheap knock-off Metallica shirts and novelties. We enjoyed the range of businesses that offered kids activities and prizes without the pressure to buy a timeshare or be coerced into Solar Panels on our home. There was amazing food, with more healthy options (Sushi, Boost, Sweet Potato Fries) than we have seen elsewhere and an eating area with a varied range of speciality meals and desserts. We went both days, which allowed the kids to check out their favourite activities numerous times. The free activities ranged from Sand Art, Jumping Castles, Paint arts and crafts, Laser Tag, Trampolines, Lego Building and facepainting/tattoos. Additional rides for an extra cost at the Kids Zone were Pony Rides and a Petting Zoo. They also had the Amusement rides at the other end for the older kids, with the standard unlimited ride armbands for $30. We did have a bit of a hiccup, where Brock got into a bit of trouble (distracted by the topless mermaid no doubt, he IS 10 after all...) and didn't pay attention to where he was walking. He kicked a young buskers amp and bent the adapter lead, rendering his voice and guitar back to acoustic level. We stood there stunned for a minute (I have never seen a 17yo guy so close to tears) before we realised that dad (Pop) had his soldering iron on hand, who managed to fix the shredded wiring. Brock then refused to walk anywhere with us for about 2 hours, for fear of walking past the kid again and feeling absolutely woeful because his amp was still crackling. Overall, we really enjoyed our time at Redcliffe and are keen to get back next year. We found all the food options and activities were reasonably priced, entry was cheap for a family, and while the swell of moving prams (and enlarged bellies) was sometimes difficult to navigate we never felt crowded or as though we were waiting obscenely long for food or activities. We highly recommend a visit to KiteFest! HIGHLIGHTS BROCK
I loved the Splatt! Sponge Attack the most, especially against Zach. My other favourite thing was being together as a family and watching the huge kites. It was really cool that they had it on the waterfront because we got to play at the cool playgrounds and walk along the beach. My favourite food was the flavoured liquorice, my grape flavoured fairy floss and the Garlic Lango's that I tried for the first time. My favourite kite was the Mermaid- (she had her boobs out!), Dragon and the Stingray. ZACH I loved playing Splatt! Sponge Attack against kids that didn't have anyone to play with. We were in Splatt Nation area so I got to do cool stuff like throw paint-filled water bombs at a sign. My favourite food was the free Maltesers I won in the ball toss game, as well as the deep-fried Mozzarella Sticks. My favourite kite was the the skeleton ones. EMME I loved the KITEFEST KIDS area, especially the free Sand Art area. I made a SandArt with a kitten and a rose that says I love you. They laminated it so we could take it home and I liked that the page was warm after it was laminated. My favourite food was the fairy floss, which I had in Bubblegum flavour. My favourite kite was the Stingray and the Whale.
